I’m Nathan Kelly, a professional photographer based in Cairns with more than 30 years of experience photographing live music, concerts, festivals and performers.

Over three decades behind the camera, I’ve photographed some of the world’s most recognisable musicians and performers, including The Rolling Stones, R.E.M., Nick Cave, U2, B.B. King and Robert Plant, along with countless Australian and international artists.

Live music photography is challenging, fast-moving and often unpredictable.

Lighting can change from second to second. Performers move constantly, audiences react to the music and the most powerful photograph might happen for only a fraction of a second.

A good concert photographer needs to understand all of this while working quickly and, when required, discreetly.

My approach is to capture more than simply the performer standing at a microphone. I look for the moments that communicate the personality of the artist and the atmosphere of the performance — from dramatic stage lighting and powerful performances to audience reactions and the energy of a packed venue.

My career in music photography began decades before the current era of digital cameras and social media.

Over the past 30 years, I’ve photographed major international touring artists as well as Australian musicians, bands, performers and emerging artists.
