I’m Nathan Kelly, a Cairns theatre photographer with more than 30 years of professional photography experience, specialising in theatre, dance, live performance, music and the performing arts.

Over my career I have created photography for some of Australia’s leading performing arts companies and producers, including Bell Shakespeare Company, Queensland Ballet, Bangarra Dance Theatre and Cameron Mackintosh Ltd, as well as working with performers, directors, musicians, production companies and arts organisations.

My experience photographing professional productions allows me to anticipate movement, expression and lighting to create images that communicate the character and atmosphere of a performance.

Performances often take place in low light, with rapidly changing lighting states, movement and complex staging. The photographer needs to understand when to capture the decisive moment without distracting from the performance.

My work has also included photography for Queensland Ballet, capturing the movement, precision and physicality of professional ballet.
